#7/100 – George Fitzgerald – Fading Love

I think this is the only album I got as part of winning a contest held by a promotional company. Good thing that I like the album, but it’s more interesting and introspective after listening to it again after some years. Knife to the Heart is one of many tracks that take the album title and give the perspective of one who is struggling. Compelling nonetheless.

#6/100 – Johnny Cash and The Tennessee Two – Show Time

I may have put this one on years ago, but I was really disappointed this round because it feels as though it may have been banking on the success of other, actual live performances with fake crowd noises. It’s not a very good sounding pressing/mastering, but I did find some solace in the spirit of The Wreck of the Old ’97 and it’s performance. There are better Cash albums out there.

#5/100 – Front 242 – Front by Front

I’ve been a fan of the Belgian EBM group Front 242 for about 30 years, and I have a decent collection of their vinyl from Was Trax and RRE. Front by Front was their first album that found popularity in the US with Headhunter and it’s B-side Welcome to Paradise, which isn’t on the LP but is on the CD. Terminal State was COVID-19 in a track, so it was my pick of Side B.

#2/100 – A Tribe Called Quest – The Low End Theory

I first bought this album on cassette when it was new, 30 years ago. It’s stayed with me that whole time, so I picked it up on wax the first time I saw it. I dipped out of hip-hop before Midnight Marauders and the “Golden Era” was in place, but my fond memories of this era remain. Unmistakable vibe with Ron Carter on the bass while Q-Tip and Phife kill it. Show Business may be a little bit dated, but only a little bit.

#1/100 – Stan Getz & JJ Johnson – At the Opera House

The first pick of this project was almost random, but I knew it would be a great starter. I’m a jazz fan, but I prefer to find rather than seek, so this album from a library’s media sale fit the bill perfect. A pretty solid recording from 1957 on Verve, Side B’s pick was It Never Entered My Mind. That seductive intro alone sold it, and it really doesn’t falter.

#100VinylSides Project

I’m about to go on a bit of a journey through my record collection. What I hope this does is a few things for me, and hopefully some for those readers and listeners out there. I’d like an excuse to just go an put on a record more regularly, but maybe not a complete album. I also have a lot of records that I may not have listened to which were acquired at some point but have yet to be heard. Some of these are a little uncommon, while others aren’t available on streaming services or even a CD.

I’ll be including a brief description of the record I’m listening to, 100 total in this first run, and which side of the record I sampled. If it’s a double album I’m only picking one of three or four sides. There may be EPs or even single remixes if I’m feeling adventurous. We’ll see.

Also included in the posts will be a link to the exact release I put on the turntable, as best I can find on Discogs. Finally, I’ll do my best to find a YouTube video for you. I can’t guarantee every one of these will have that, but we’ll see.

Come along on the journey and feel free to use the #100VinylSides hashtag on Twitter to see what I’ve been hearing.
